GUEST POST: 3 Ways to Banish Boring Hair

It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to your everyday hairstyle. In today’s guest post, local Portland Hair Stylist Caitlyn Miller (the Stylist mentioned in Sarah C’s guest post a few weeks ago) shares her tips for spicing up your look, so that you never feel bored with your hair again.

For information on how to book an appointment with Caitlyn, see her Bio at the end of this post.

As a Stylist I talk to people about their hair every day, and the main complaint I get from new clients is that they’re bored with their hair. More often than not I find that minor tweaks as opposed to a full makeover will do the trick. I’ve put together a list of three easy and cost-effective ways to get rid of that “blah” feeling and put some fun back into your locks.

1. Learn a New Style (Or Two).

A lot of clients and friends of mine have great hair, but they only know how to wear it one way. Too often girls get stuck in a rut of reaching for one tool (such as a flat iron) every time they style because they think that’s the only thing that looks good. I recommend broadening your styling knowledge.

One way to learn some new hair-dos is to check out the “How-To” videos on YouTube when you get some free time. I love Bumble and Bumble’s YouTube channel (pictured below). They have some really cute updos that you can do in only a minute or so. There’s also lots of amateur videos you can learn from.

If you have a Hair Stylist that teaches you how to style your hair (which I really hope you do), ask her for some fresh ideas on your next visit. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, too. If your Stylist doesn’t currently teach you how to do your hair at home it may be time to ask her to show you how or to find a new stylist altogether. Your Stylist should spend a portion of the service you’re paying her for to teach you rather than gossiping the whole time.

Another way to learn new hairstyles is to just simply play around. Remember when you were young and would sit in front of a mirror with makeup for hours, teaching yourself how to do it? It’s good to do that with hair, too. Practice makes perfect, after all! Find a few photos of styles you like and copy them.

2. Accessorize!

We all have those days the alarm clock goes off too late and we’re forced to rock a ponytail or bun. But those days don’t have to be grungy days! Fun headbands or clips are great ways to dress up a boring ponytail or bun.

I’m loving the wood clips Carolina Herrera used in her New York Fashion Week runway show (pictured above). Try gathering your hair into a low ponytail and securing it with a similar clip. It’ll keep your hair out of your face in a very chic way.

Spring is coming, so why not add a fun flower? Tuck your hair behind one ear and secure a bright flower in your hair directly behind your ear.

I’ve always been a fan of headbands, especially vintage-inspired or feathered ones. They’re great to wear with solid-colored dresses. I love these Forever 21 headbands, which cost around $8:

3. Try a Subtle Color Change.

Bored with your color but not wanting to part with your natural hue? Ask your stylist for a few highlights or lowlights. If you don’t want to have to maintain the color, just ask her not to color any hair on the canopy (the hair that lies over the rest of the hair) and to do diffused foils.

If you feel like you need more than just a few pieces brightened up, try a topcoat (a clear gloss with a little bit of semi-permanent color) to warm up your tresses. The color will gradually fade out with shampooing so you won’t have to worry about a grow-out line, and the gloss will help keep your ends smooth and prevent breakage.

If either of these ideas still seems too permanent for you, invest in clip-in color piece. Balmain has fun colors that clip into your bangs. They’re great for when you want to add a pop of color for going out, but not permanent so you don’t have to worry about what your boss will think.

Every girl gets bored with her hair at times, even stylists! The key is to try new things. Spring is the perfect time to try some fun new styles.

Spring fashion and TOMS

The official start of spring has gotten me more than a little excited about all the clothes that I’ll finally be able to break out of my closet (and those I get to add to it). Although it stays cold and wet a little longer here in Oregon than it does elsewhere, I’m still thinking about the sun!

Although we’re going to see a lot of bring colors this spring, I can’t get last season’s muted colors out of my head. I still plan to wear a lot of camel and grays… Hopefully I’ll be able to branch out and combine my colors with others such as bright orange, hot pink, green, and purple, which I predict are going to be HUGE this season!

The first item I’m determined to add to my wardrobe is a pair of red TOMS. I’ve never owned TOMS before, but I hear they feel like pillows surrounding your feet. Another great thing about TOMS is that for every pair you buy, the company donates a pair of new shoes to a child in need! I can’t wait to get my hands on (and my feet into) a pair of these…

Classic Red Canvas, $44 at TOMS.com

Another thing I love about these shoes is that they’re so versatile. When I was thinking about the outfits I want to wear this summer, I realized that these TOMS will look simply perfect with absolutely every one of them. I can’t wait!

Here is a taste of the sorts of outfits I’m yearning to wear right now…

1. Vince Tops in Light Grey, $390 at matchesfashion.com. Distressed Boyfriend Short, $78 at 25park.com.
2. Corl Cutaway Strap Crop Suntop, $50 at topshop.com. Acci Black & Ecru Shorts, $65 at coggles.com.
3. Women’s Knitwear, $26 at desireclothing.co.uk. Distressed Denim Hootpant, $32 at newlook.com.
4. Navy Stripe Scoop Vest, $16 at dorthyperkins.com. Vena Cava De Palma Short, $295 at barneys.com.
5. Love Potion no. 9 Oversize T-shirt, $95 at youheshe.com. Lestta skirt, $315 at shopmrsh.com.
6. Blue stripe tie front River Island crop t-shirt, $21 at riverisland.com. Hudson Slim-cut boot jeans, $176 at amrag.com.

What’s on your wish list for spring this year? I’d love to know!

Florals and Stripes

Forever 21 sweater, J Crew skirt, BCBG pumps (seen here), Ann Taylor LOFT necklace, Michael Kors watch (seen here), vintage ring

These days clothing stores everywhere seem to be stocked with stripes, upon stripes, upon stripes. They’re everywhere! Now don’t get me wrong – I’m not complaining. I love the fun, sailor look that is absolutely unavoidable when stripes are in the picture (especially when they’re blue and white). A little cheesy, but cute!

While bargain shopping a few weeks ago at Forever 21 and H&M, I inevitably walked away with quite a few striped items. I couldn’t stop myself… I’m not sure if my eyes were just really drawn to all the stripes or if my purchasing pattern was simply a reflection of my utter lack of creativity (I hope not!). But at any rate, my closet is now filled with striped items.

Similarly, I went through a floral period at one point in my life (who hasn’t?) and ever since I’ve been searching for excuse to recycle my most flowery of clothing. I was looking into my closet this morning, totally uninspired, when I my eyes darted to an outfit pairing that I swear was calling my name.

Stripes and floral! Floral and stripes! So I went with it…

I decided to brave the cold this morning with bare legs (in the name of fashion, of course), sporting a knee-length floral skirt and a red and white striped sweater. Now to be honest, I would have much preferred to have worn my blue and white striped t-shirt with this skirt, but I would have been much too cold and have felt utterly ridiculous. Oh well.

Anyway, whether we like it or not, stripes are ‘in’ this year. Is this something you’re are embracing? Tell me!

How to pluck and shape your eyebrows

Properly sculpted eyebrows can do wonders for any face. Creating the right shape will help enhance your natural beauty, making your face appear softer and balanced, with or without makeup. However, sometimes our tweezers can get the best of us. Believe it or not, there is a method to this madness and a RIGHT and a WRONG way to pluck and shape.

Prep work

Wash your face first. Using warm water. Then pat your skin dry with a towel. This helps relax the skin and hair follicles so that plucking will be easier and less painful.
Use tweezers with slanted ends. For example, Tweezerman Slant Tweezers. Bad tweezers can cut you, make it difficult to grab the hair, or make hair break off mid-pull. This all results in a painful, time-consuming experience that can be easily avoided with the right tweezers.
Trim your eyebrows. Skipping this step makes it likely that you’ll overpluck without realizing you are doing it. Brush your brows upwards with a brow brush (or toothbrush) and then trim any stray hairs (hairs outside of your natural shape) with scissors. Preferably brow scissors.

Determining your shape

1) The innermost part of your brow should be directly over the inside corner of your eye. Trust me, plucking any father in will make your nose appear wider and your features look harsher.

2) The arch of your eyebrow should be over the outside of your pupil.

3) And the outer part of your brows should end just about one half inch above the outer corner of your eyes on the outside.

Plucking

Now, draw on yourself. Seriously. Take a bit of concealer (in my representation above I used red) and color around the shape you want your eyebrows to be so that you know exactly where to pluck. This makes it easy to stay within the shape you want.

Personally, I don’t really believe in plucking above your eyebrows unless you have really dark hair. But that’s up to you.

Next, tweeze excess hairs (the ones you colored over) slowly, making sure to stay within the shape you established. Some people find switching eyebrows back and forth every few hairs helpful, because it helps you make sure you’re even on both sides.

When you’re finished, step back and admire your work. Make sure your brows are even. And volia! This should have instantly “opened” the look of your eyes and defined your features.

It’s a whole new you! (In a good way!)

The most common mistakes people make when tending to their brows is over-plucking, not plucking at all, or not trimming. Whether you are guilty of any of these or not (I don’t judge…), paying attention to the tips above will help you clean up your brows in no time!

Ps. This post was written per request from my dear friend Brittany Taylor. Brittany, I hope you find this information life changing… ;)

Not to go into too much detail about my insecurities or anything, but I really, really hate how thin my lips are! I’ve briefly fantasized about getting lip injections, but then celebrity photos like this one, and this one bring me back to reality.

Such beautiful women ruining their already perfect faces with surgery! So sad. Not that I’m implying that I’m anywhere near their caliber in the looks department, but have you ever actually seen an attractive result from lip injections? I don’t think I have… (Okay maybe Megan Fox, if she really did have lip injections… But I’m still not so sure she did. Your thoughts?) I digress…

I would, perhaps, look a little bit ridiculous rocking some Angelina Jolie puckers (my face is a little on the small side), but I still would like a little bit of oomph!

So if I can’t do it the surgical way, I guess I’ll have to settle for the purely cosmetic way. I’m currently craving a good lip pluming gloss. Quite a few years ago I jumped on the lip venom band wagon, and a few months ago I blogged about vampire lip gloss, but I haven’t found anything that I’m totally thrilled with – yet.

Here are some lip pumpers I’m considering trying. Have you experimented with any of these? Do you have any suggestions?

1. Smash Box O-Plump, $24 – My manager at my last job recommended this stuff! She always looks great, but I didn’t feel like it did a whole lot for me. Maybe I should give it another chance?
2. Lancome Color Fever Gloss, $26
3. Lip Fusion XL, $50
4. Just Plump, $49.99

Betterfly.com is a new site that helps connect people looking for services providers of all kinds. They have over 1,000 self-improvement categories to choose from. It’s a great resource for finding individuals who are the best in their field and focused on making you better (they call these people “Betterists.”)

One of the major categories on the site is Beauty so I was honored when Lauren from Betterfly contacted me to write a guest post for the beauty section of Betterfly’s blog.

Lauren gave me the option to write about anything beauty-related that leads to bettering yourself, so I decided on the topic of skincare.

You can check out my post “Better Your Skin on a Budget” on Betterfly’s blog and learn about the do-it-yourself facemask I put together with just two easy ingredients!

Also, you should seriously consider signing up for Betterfly so that you can take advantage of all that it has to offer! There are a ton of places out there that provide reviews of various venues, but Betterfly is the only site I’ve come across that really focuses on what matters: the people who make those venues great.

Betterfly focuses on “Betterists” which is important because when you’re buying a service like a haircut, it comes down to the skill-level of the individuals working at the salon, not the salon itself. Betterfly really gets that.

I hope you enjoy my guest post and take a few minutes to check out the rest of Betterfly to find some Betterists near you!

I’ve failed you this week. I’m sorry! I’ve just been SO busy with work (and with life) that I haven’t had the chance to post for seven days. I thought that one of my guest posts would be ready this week so you’d have something to read, but it wasn’t. Please accept my sincere apology and my promise that it won’t happen again for quite a while.

Right now I’m seriously coveting a wrap-around watch in a fun pattern. As you might have noticed, I already have a watch (seen here), but this one is different. I’ve actually been eyeing some variation of this watch for over a year now, and I’m waiting to for a good excuse to go buy it…

The price isn’t all that unreasonable either – all of these watches are around $100, give or take a few bucks.

You know when you have a really specific vision for an outfit stuck in your head? And you’re totally set on it until you finally put the outfit together? (Maybe that’s just me…) Well that is what is happening with me and this watch. I desperately want to wear one of these with some bangles and load up on rings at the same time, and my other watch on my other wrist (is that going to far?).

At any rate, me likey!

Le Mer The Bali Stud Watch in Gold, $115

Le Mer Caramel Snake Skin Wrap Watch, $82

Le Mer The Bali Stud Watch, $98

Le Mer Tourista Watch with Black Strap, $96

Am I crazy or is there something really special about these? What have you been lusting after lately?
