How to pluck and shape your eyebrows
5 comments
Properly sculpted eyebrows can do wonders for any face. Creating the right shape will help enhance your natural beauty, making your face appear softer and balanced, with or without makeup. However, sometimes our tweezers can get the best of us. Believe it or not, there is a method to this madness and a RIGHT and a WRONG way to pluck and shape.
• Wash your face first. Using warm water. Then pat your skin dry with a towel. This helps relax the skin and hair follicles so that plucking will be easier and less painful.
• Use tweezers with slanted ends. For example, Tweezerman Slant Tweezers. Bad tweezers can cut you, make it difficult to grab the hair, or make hair break off mid-pull. This all results in a painful, time-consuming experience that can be easily avoided with the right tweezers.
• Trim your eyebrows. Skipping this step makes it likely that you’ll overpluck without realizing you are doing it. Brush your brows upwards with a brow brush (or toothbrush) and then trim any stray hairs (hairs outside of your natural shape) with scissors. Preferably brow scissors.
1) The innermost part of your brow should be directly over the inside corner of your eye. Trust me, plucking any father in will make your nose appear wider and your features look harsher.
2) The arch of your eyebrow should be over the outside of your pupil.
3) And the outer part of your brows should end just about one half inch above the outer corner of your eyes on the outside.
Now, draw on yourself. Seriously. Take a bit of concealer (in my representation above I used red) and color around the shape you want your eyebrows to be so that you know exactly where to pluck. This makes it easy to stay within the shape you want.
Personally, I don’t really believe in plucking above your eyebrows unless you have really dark hair. But that’s up to you.
Next, tweeze excess hairs (the ones you colored over) slowly, making sure to stay within the shape you established. Some people find switching eyebrows back and forth every few hairs helpful, because it helps you make sure you’re even on both sides.
When you’re finished, step back and admire your work. Make sure your brows are even. And volia! This should have instantly “opened” the look of your eyes and defined your features.
It’s a whole new you! (In a good way!)
The most common mistakes people make when tending to their brows is over-plucking, not plucking at all, or not trimming. Whether you are guilty of any of these or not (I don’t judge…), paying attention to the tips above will help you clean up your brows in no time!
Ps. This post was written per request from my dear friend Brittany Taylor. Brittany, I hope you find this information life changing… ;)
I never know how much space to leave between my eyebrows! Thank you this is SO helpful!
Very informative! I usually get mine waxed, but I’m going to try plucking using your guide instead.
Great guidelines! Do you use pencil on your eyebrows too?
Thanks for the feedback you guys! I don’t actually pencil my brows, but I’m considering starting. A friend of mine told me that your brows are supposed to be a few shades darker than your hair color.
