Fall 2011 trends and key pieces to look out for

{Image above: Top trends from Fashion Week 2011}

Seeing as today is the first day of Fall 2011, I just have to share this wonderful video from Red Godfrey, Nordstrom‘s VP Creative Director of Product and Trends, with her take on this season’s key looks. Enjoy!

The beautiful thing about this season’s “trends” is that they’re not really trends at all. Instead, they’re unique twists on classic colors, shapes, and finishes. Which styles are you most looking forward to?

Etsy handmade leather clutches

$119 on Etsy

As you may have noticed, I’ve been on a bit of an Etsy.com kick lately (see here and here). But that’s only because it’s like, the most amazing place to shop, ever!

Seriously, though. Etsy is the home to many beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces.

So lately, I’ve been really wanting a luxurious, spacious, leather clutch for everyday wear. Naturally, I turned to Etsy.

I’m envisioning either envelope style, fold over or zipped. Here are some beauties from Etsy that caught my eye. Which are your favorites?

♥ Forever 21 shorts ♥ Express shirt ♥ H&M blazer (also worn here) ♥ Guess pumps ♥ HRH Collection Necklace (also seen here) ♥ Forever 21 bracelet (also seen here) ♥ Michael Kors watch ♥ LV handbag ♥

These photos were taken on what I believe may have been the last warm, sunny day in Portland for the year. Call me crazy, but I’m looking forward to the change in weather that Fall brings. I love getting caught in the rain, splashing in puddles, and taking a warm bath afterwards. (What am I, 8?!)

Mother Nature, bring on the cold! I’m ready for ya with some knee-length coats, wool scarves, and Burberry rain boots!

What I bought: HRH Collection necklace and Forever 21 bracelets

{♥ HRH Collection Cuff necklace, $55 ♥ Forever 21 bracelet (also in other colors – not pictured), $6.80 each}

I have photos of this whole outfit coming up in a post next Monday, so I’m not going to talk about the clothes, but I just wanted to highlight two new jewelry purchases that I’m really excited about.

The Cuff Necklace is from HRH Collection, a jewelry designer/ blogger whom I recently stumbled across. She’s got some beautiful, reasonably priced, unique pieces that make a statement with everyday wear in her online store.

And the bracelet I’m wearing in this photo is from Forever 21. I also bought it in yellow and in red, which I planned to stack on top of each other but found that I’m most partial to this teal color by itself. Because it’s from Forever 21, it’s really inexpensive (obviously). But because these bracelets are so detailed and elegant, I would have never have been the wiser had someone sold them to me at a much higher price tag from a department store. Don’t you love stuff like that?

Have you acquired any interesting statement pieces recently? I’m finding that accessories are the easiest way to update your wardrobe without breaking the bank, so expect my future outfit posts to be accessory-filled.

Fall 2011 makeup tutorial: How to get retro spider lashes

7 comments

Every season there are some new, funky makeup styles that hit the runways. This Fall, one of my favorites is spider lashes. Spider lashes are a retro, feminine style, reminiscent of 60′s and 70′s models like Twiggy. Long, clumpy, spider-like lashes will make your eyes pop. Since this is a style I have been wearing a lot lately, I decided to create a video tutorial for how to get this look. Sorry for the silly face that YouTube decided to create a freeze frame of. I never said the camera loved me.

Elegant and easy entertaining: Wine charms

{Set of 6 colorful skull wine charms for $12 from this Etsy shop}

If I’m drinking an alcoholic beverage, it’s usually wine. And whenever we entertain, we usually end up serving wine. That’s pretty typical, right?

Carter’s mom was very kind when we moved into our new apartment and took us shopping and helped us stock up on sets of red and white wine glasses from Macy’s. (I feel so grown up – having all matching wine glasses!) But what I’m realizing is that this can make for confusing dinner parties and accidental stolen drinks.

The solution? Wine charms! These little cuties help eliminate confusion as to whom each glass belongs to! Problem solved.

I was searching through Etsy and stumbled across some really neat, unique handmade wine charms that I fell in love with. Which are your favorites?

My bathroom countertop

2 comments

Seeing a friend’s bathroom for the first time can be quite telling. In a personal way, similar to seeing inside someone’s handbag, it helps you understand a little bit about where that person is coming from.

The problem with bathroom countertops is that they’re limited when it comes to space. So you’re forced to consolidate to your absolute necessities. Keeping this area looking nice can be a challenge. Do you sacrifice looks for functionality? Or do you keep your counters strictly practical? It’s really interesting to see what items make the cut for some people.

At any rate, this is what sits on display on my bathroom counter.

{A tray from TJ Maxx holds cotton balls and cue tips, stored (somewhat) neatly in jars that Carter picked up from Storables. Sweet-smelling, luxurious Hane Mori hand lotion lives on a small tray, right next to the jars. This lotion was a gift, but I love it so much I’m saving up to purchase the Hane Mari perfume.}

{A blue dish from Ikea that matches the aqua and green theme of our bathroom sits in front of the tray as a convenient place for me to toss my watch, rings and other small jewelry and bobby pins at the end of the day}

{Occasionally my Brazil Nut Body Butter from The Body Shop (SO yummy!) gets tucked away in my drawers, but usually it gets left out because I’m constantly using it to moisturize.}

{My perfumes are always on my countertop, for convenience. I wish I could choose just one to make things less cluttered (and aren’t women supposed to have a “signature scent”?), but I find myself rotating between these three depending on my mood.}

{I usually attempt to put my hair tools away after I use them, but it seldom happens. Usually, they get left out on the edge of my countertop like this.}

Ever since our move, my countertop has reached a somewhat happy medium between functional and attractive. Fortunately for us, our bathroom has storage behind the mirror and a decent amount of cabinet space, so we can afford to be a little more flexible. I shove my not-so-attractive face wash, face lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste away in my drawers so I don’t have to stare at them when I’m not using them.

Where are the rest of my beauty products, you may be wondering? Well, that explosion of madness is hidden away in my drawers nowhere near ready to be unveiled on this blog just yet.

What makes the cut on your bathroom counter?

Mustard yellow outfit and Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain review

♥ Forever 21 mustard-colored blouse ♥ J Brand jeans ♥ H&M necklace ♥ Jigsaw clutch ♥ Ralph Lauren loafers ♥ Nordstrom ring ♥ Revlon Just Bitten Lip stain + Balm in “Gothic” ♥

I bought Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain in on recommendation from my friend Lauren and it’s great! The color has great pigment and stays on for hours. It’s a awesome alternative to lipstick. “Gothic” is a really, really deep red color. I toned it down by brushing some pink lipgloss over it, so these pictures don’t really show it’s true hue. It’s a much deeper red than it looks here. I want to buy Revlon’s more coral color because it looks a little less intense, so I’ll report back after I do and let you guys know what that looks like. Overall, I highly recommend this lip stain, it’s a good value for only $8.98.

This weekend had it’s highs and lows. Much of it was really stressful. Our puppy Winston spent Friday, Saturday and part of Sunday really sick – which was scary. It’s weird being responsible for the wellbeing of someone else. I’ve never had to do that before. I too wasn’t feeling well for most of the weekend, so that didn’t really help matters. Two vet visits later and a lot of tears (Carter remained strong but I was a mess), Winston is back to his energetic, silly puppy self. Poor guy.

Sunday and Monday were much better, though. Carter, Winston and I attended a BBQ at his parents house, visited our friends’ newborn baby (SO CUTE!), and did chores around the house. Other than “watching” the Duck game with some girlfriends, Winston’s troubles kept me away from friends for most of the weekend. Oh, the responsibilities of being a puppy mama!

These photos were taken the evening before Winston got sick. I wore this mustard-colored blouse to work with jeans, loafers and my current favorite piece of jewelry, a red statement necklace from H&M. What a steal, right?! I live for pieces that look expensive and luxurious (like my blouse and necklace) but cost next to nothing.

Pleated skirts

Oh my gosh. It’s already September?! Where has the summer gone?

Sorry for the lack of posts so far this week. I’ve been really busy at work and in the time I’ve spent working on my blog, I’ve been giving it a facelift instead of posting. What do you think? Do you like the new banner, buttons and boarder? I also updated my “About” section and added a contact form to my “PR Policy” so feel free to take a look!

Anyway, on to these delicious skirts!

Maybe it’s just because they’re universally flattering, but I’m really digging pleated skirts for Fall. The tight pencil-shaped skirts that have been popular for the last few years, although super gorg on some women, never did me any favors. From lady-like chiffon to biker leather, these pleated skirts cinch the waste and graze the hips just right, creating a perfectly feminine silhouette.

I’m actually wearing a pleated skirt today. And my telling you this means that there’s an outfit post to come. So stay tuned!

Ps. Funny Sad story – I actually bought the faux leather skirt (pictured above) from H&M a few weeks ago but then had a wave of guilt for shopping and went right back and returned it. I’ve been thinking about it ever since and constructing outfits in my head (similar to this one) so I went back to the store yesterday to buy it and it was sold out. Devastating! It looks like I could still buy it online but at the moment they’re out of my size.
