Lace Shorts: Yes or a No?

The lace shorts trend first popped up last spring but has stuck around (except now you probably want to add some tights under your shorts because it has been so chilly lately). I picked up a pair of lace shorts last summer and had every intention of wearing them – but when I put them on, my boyfriend told me it looked like I was wearing underwear instead of pants. I wasn’t about the leave the house after that feedback.
I still wonder, though – was their “underwear-like quality” the fault of the shorts themselves, or was it just the way I styled them?

I was first inspired to try this trend after seeing Khatu from I am Khatu wearing lace shorts (above). I’m seriously obsessed with her style and of course – she looks perfectly classy in everything… So they don’t look like underwear on her at all.
After Madwell reminded me this isn’t just a summer trend with this look yesterday, I scoured Pinterest for more inspiration on how to wear this style. Here are some images Pinterest helped me come up with.
I tried to choose photos where you could see most or the entire outfit so you could really judge for yourself. Let me know what you think! Am I crazy for wanting to try this style again?
How you style them makes a difference. With a conservative top, I think they're totally acceptable.
I have #3 and #5. Definitely a YES in my opinion!
If one has long, slender legs, I think this can work, but perhaps more of a night-time look.
I like them :) I say wear them, you can totally pull them off!

Oh I love them! So maybe they're not office appropriate but I think you could definitely wear them well on weekends!
i think whats goin on is the shorts you have are a little too ruffley..which does translate into underwear where the other styles are more a solid cut of lace
I think you'd be able to pull them off. They are a little underwear like at first glance but it depends on what you pair with them.
Definitely a go! Since its cold out. Wear a pair of tights with them and a cute top and your ready to go out

Do you know if forever21 is selling the lace shorts on their website?
I am so torn! I tried on a pair like picture 1 today. And I put them back because to me they looked like underwear, so I felt self conscious and I also thought I might be too old for them. But now I kind of want them again. I'm gonna try them on again tomorrow if they're still there!
While we find all of the shorts to be attractive… we think they do look a bit like underwear. Keep in mind that Bill and I are 70 years old!
