• New jewelry system: One step closer to completing my closet

    3 comments

    {Vintage button thumb tacks from this Etsy store}

    As I mentioned before, I’ve been working diligently to create my dream closet and I’m not going to post photos of it until it meets all of my closet needs in an ascetically pleasing manner. That being said, I’m one step closer to being finished now that I’ve ordered these from Etsy:

    They’re vintage button thumb tacks and I’m going to use them on a cork board to hang some of the jewelry that I wear most often (and to inspire myself to remember to accessorize). I’m hoping this will be a beautiful and efficient way to display my jewelry so that it’s easily accessible as I’m putting together outfits. If you like this idea, check out these other cute, homemade thumb tacks from Etsy.

    As you may remember from this blog post, I use jewelry holders from Urban Outfitters (pictured below) to store the bulk of my jewelry.

    That worked fairly well for me when I had a nice nook in the wall of my old apartment to display large jewelry holders, but I don’t have the same designated nook in my new place. Unfortunately, in the new apartment, my jewelry holders have become an afterthought in our decor, tucked away in one of our storage closets, only to be forgotten about when I’m deliriously getting ready for the day at 6 in the a.m. (I’m NOT a morning person). Hopefully, my new hanging jewelry system will prove to be more efficient.

    Unfortunately, my new system doesn’t give me any ideas for what to do with my watch and my rings at the end of the day. Do you have any ideas? What system do you use to display your jewelry?

    10 of-the-moment styles and how to wear them

    {Image from Hanneli}

    Sometimes updating your look is as simple as remixing what your already own and adjusting the way you think about your style. Recent trends with their casual, 70′s vibe are very conducive to this strategy. With easy-to-wear pieces, simple accessories to add, and a few beautiful basics you probably already own, you can create an array of chic new looks with very little effort. Below are some fun of-the-moment styles that fashionistas everywhere have been embracing this season. I thought I’d give my vanity a day off and skip photos of myself and instead feature my favorite trends on some of my favorite bloggers who inspire my blog and my style every day.

    1. How to wear a half-tucked shirt: (photo above)

    Hanneli captured this photograph of the half-tucked shirt beautifully. I love this style because it’s easy to wear, and you don’t have to worry about the tuck being perfect (sometimes tucked-in shirts can be fussy, don’t you think?). But beware, this style can look very sloppy if it’s not properly accessorized and worn with tailored and polished clothing. (It’s supposed to look like glamour not grudge.) I suggest skipping the t-shirt and using a button up as your half-tucked shirt (like the model is wearing), and pairing it with neatly tailored pants or shorts, and some heels or wedges. Add a necklace and some bracelets to look ultra put together (but not preppy), and you’re good to go.

    2. How to wear delicate, silk shorts:

    {Image from Sugarlaws}

    Trendy shorts are making such a comeback this summer. Different styles are popping up all over the place, ranging from retro textures like lace, crochet and leather (see below), to soft, almost pajama-like materials and silk. (And of course, there’s the denim cutoff.) But silk has to be one of my favorite shorts trends this season. It’s sophisticated but easy to wear at the same time. The classically beautiful Katy from my daily read, Sugarlaws, demonstrates the delicate simplicity of such a style.

    3. How to wear a floral sun dress:

    {Image from Just Zipped}

    I don’t care how you feel about floral. Everyone seems to have an opinion but it’s undeniable that a floral sundress paired with a black blazer is the perfect look for a windy July evening. The lovely Chelsea from Just Zipped shows us how to wear this style flawlessly. Loose, romantic hair, a summer glow and a big smile are all the accessories you need. (The meadow of yellow flowers is optional.)

    4. How to wear a denim shirt:

    {Image from Cupcakes and Cashmere}

    By contrasting a masculine, denim button-down shirt with an ultra-feminine lace skirt, Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere shows us how you can wear this style and still feel girly, with just a little bit of an edge. Other interesting ways to wear denim shirts? As a jacket over a sundress, with jeans (I know – originally a faux pas…), tucked into a skirt, and tucked into white or black pants.

    5. How to wear coral lipstick:

    {Image from A Lovely Escape}

    The always-lovely Audrey Marie from A Lovely Escape shows us how gorgeous coal can be. Form her lipstick, to her blouse, to her ring – she’s got it right! I happen to be very partial to this look because coral is one of my favorite colors. But if you’re not ready to go “all-out coral” just yet, take baby steps by pairing coral lipstick with clothes in more understated colors, like black, cream, or navy.

    6. How to wear a military jacket:

    {Image from Stirling Style}

    The military jacket is another example of a great masculine piece that is fun to offset with seriously feminine fabrics, like lace and floral. Trade out your blazer for the military jacket when you’re wearing your favorite LBD, sundress, or floral top. Or wear it like Taylor from Stirling Style, paired with tailored jeans and a striped top for a casual dinner.

    7. How to get messy, textured hair:

    {Image from Fashion Toast}

    The overwhelmingly fabulous Rumi from Fashion Toast uses Bumble & Bumble Texture Cream to give her hair the textured, messy look that she has become the poster girl for. But the best part is that you don’t have to be a famous blogger to pull this look off – summer is a perfect time to experiment with low maintenance texture in your hair.

    8. How to do color blocking:

    {Image from I am Khatu}

    The notion that you need to offset brights with neutrals is no more. Khatu from I am Khatu shows us the right way to do color blocking. Bright top, contrasting bright skirt, bright belt, bright clutch. It’s impossible not to love this look.

    9. How to wear a tied button-down:

    {Image from Breakfast at Saks}

    Stylish Ashley from Breakfast at Saks demonstrates how perfect and tasteful a tied-front shirt can look. Looking for tie-front shirts? Nasty Gal has lots of them. Or just play around with your favorite button-up and find a style of tie that works for you.

    10. How to wear leather shorts:

    {Image from The Blonde Salad}

    The Blonde Salad‘s Chiara couldn’t look more fashionable in these leather shorts. Pairing the them with a crisp white button down was the perfect move. Another great way to wear leather shorts is with a cream crochet top. Check out NastyGal.com for more ideas.

    How to use BB Surf Spray and wash your hair less often

    8 comments

    {My “day 2 hair” after having styled it with Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray the day before}

    It was love at first sight for Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray and me. Ever since my hair stylist Caitlyn first introduced us a few months ago, we’ve been inseparateable. Sure, it cost me $24 that I could have spent on, say, a few other products. But it’s such a small price to pay for something that has been there for me when I needed it most – on good hair days and bad, through thick and thin, curls, waves, and straight hair – BB surf spray has helped me overcome my “day two hair blues” like nothing and no one ever could. And I predict that this will be a long-lasting, committed relationship.

    Contrary to the suggested use of this product, I actually rarely use BB Surf Spray to create “beach-y waves” (although it’s good at doing that too). I use it so that I don’t have to wash my hair every day.

    Before you close your browser thinking – “Gross! Sarah doesn’t wash her hair everyday” – listen to me for a second. Contrary to how it sounds, I’m not a gross, dirty person. I promise! Washing your hair every day is actually BAD for your hair! Don’t believe me? Google it! Or just read one of my or my guest posters’ previous blog posts that have talked about it.

    (Not that you asked, but just so you know – I still take daily showers, using a shower cap on days I’m not washing my hair.)

    So, anyway! BB Surf Spray is fabulous for absorbing oil and making sure your hair doesn’t fall flat a day or two after you wash it. (Some people can even make it a week between washes with this product!) I find it especially helpful for my bangs, which tend to get oily the fastest.

    Step 1: Shampoo your hair as usual. Lightly towel dry. Then establish your normal part by combing your hair as you usually would.

    Step 2: Brush your hair back at your hairline so that the hair that usually brushes against your face is away from your face.

    Step 3: Holding the bottle about four inches from your head, spritz the under part of your bangs along your hairline with BB Surf Spray. Hold your bangs back if that’s easier for you, like I’m doing in the photo. I usually spray this area about seven times, distributing fairly evenly along my hairline but focusing a little more on my bangs.

    Step 4: After you’ve tackled your hairline, lift your hair at the roots along the back and the sides of your head, spraying your roots as you lift, where you wish to create volume (and absorb the oil that your scalp produces throughout the day).

    Step 5: Style your as your normally would – with a blow dryer, or not. Straight or curly – it doesn’t matter! (Or try one of these hairstyles.)

    The BB Surf Spray should have given your hair extra lift at the roots, resulting in extra volume. And the next day your hair should still be oil-free and voluminous. If you feel that your hair needs a touchup a day or two later, spritz your roots again with the Surf Spray and blow it dry with a hairdryer.

    Oh, and in case you don’t already own this life-changing product – you can purchase Bumble & Bumble Surf Spray from Sephora.com or at your local Target store (or at Au Salon in Portland on NW 23rd, where I bought it.) There’s a reason the Surf Spray is Bumble & Bumble’s best selling product – it kicks butt!

    5 myths about SPF, UVA and UVB

    4 comments

    With the sun peeping out from behind the clouds more days than not lately, it has become increasingly important to pay attention to the condition and care of our skin. There are a lot of mixed messages out there about UV exposure, so I decided to do some research to debunk a few myths (specifically those relating to women/beauty) and give some perspective on making educated decisions about UV rays.

    Myth #1: Your daily moisturizer with SPF is enough to protect your skin

    Of course, it’s convenient when our makeup or moisturizer already has SPF in it. But be warned – According to Glamour magazine, most daily facial moisturizers with SPF usually only protect from UVB rays, not UVA.

    Ultraviolet-a (UVA) and ultraviolet-b (UVB) pose different threats than one another. UVA are longer wavelengths from the sun and penetrate deeper into the skin, and may be the culprit behind aging. UVB rays have shorter wavelengths and are more likely to cause sun burn and skin cancer.

    Products that contain SPF (“sun protection factor”) only protect the skin from UVB rays, which isn’t enough to completely protect us from the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.

    This is why it’s important to use a block that is UVA/UVB or broad-spectrum protection. Look for moisturizers and sunscreens that contain zinc oxide, or a combination of avobenzone and octocrylene. And are SPF 15 or higher.
    (Sources: Glamour magazine and Skinfitnessfacts.com)

    Myth #2: A few minutes in the sun never hurt anyone

    Although it might feel like you weren’t in the sun for very long, your body doesn’t see it that way. The truth is that it only takes about 10 minutes for UV radiation to begin to damage your skin. The moral of the story? Don’t skimp on the sunscreen just because you’re only going to be in the sun for a few minutes – you’re better safe than sorry. And it’s not like you were expecting to get a tan only being in the sun for a few minutes, right?

    Myth #3: You can only get vitamin D from the sun

    Yes, we all need vitamin D. And yes, the sun is a great source of it. So it’s easy to jump on the “tanning = vitamin D bandwagon.” But did you know there are also high levels of vitamin D in dairy products, cereal, and fish? So eat up!

    But if you absolutely must get your vitamin D from the sun, please note that it takes much less UV to get your recommended level of vitamin D than it takes to get a suntan (or burn). And vitamin D can (and will) penetrate through most sunscreens, with the exception of the highest levels. So vitamin D is not a reasonable excuse to cook your skin. Sorry.
    (Source: Vanterbilt.edu)

    Myth #4: All sunglasses are created equal when it comes to protecting your eyes

    Like everything in life, more expensive does not guarantee better quality. But frankly, that’s often what it’s an indicator of.

    Price aside, the most important thing to look for in a pair of sunglasses is UV protection. Without it, your sunglasses are no more than an accessory to your outfit.

    For example, I like wearing earrings but I don’t expect them to keep me from getting sunburnt. (Sorry – I’m a cynical person.)

    So if you’re going to purchase sunglasses on the cheap, make sure that they have the sticker that says 100% UV protection. Otherwise, they’re useless to you.

    Myth #5: If you have skin cancer, you’ll know it when you see it

    Unless you have a trained eye (or previous experience with cancer), you probably won’t be able to tell if you have skin cancer. Scary, I know.

    To make training our eyes easier, Glamour has provided a really great Skin Check Guide for us to compare our moles to.

    But your best bet is not only to pay attention to your skin, but also to see a dermatologist regularly to have your moles checked out. If you have no history of skin cancer in your family or self, then an annual check should be sufficient. If you have a history of skin cancer in your family, you should consult your doctor to see how often you should be going in to get checked out.

    In closing…

    I’m not trying to lecture anyone about the evils of the sun and tanning beds – I’d be a hypocrite (I’m pretty sure I may still have a few old tans left on my package at Tan Republic). Although I have drastically decreased my UV exposure in the last few years, I still occasionally slip up and forget to apply sunscreen.

    However, I am going to say that it’s important to be smart and know the facts so that you can make educated decisions about your skin. It’s YOUR skin and YOUR body and ONLY YOU you can decide how you want to care for it (gosh – I feel like I’m giving the same talk that I’ve been giving about why I became a vegetarian). All I’m saying is that just like tofu is a reasonable substitute for meat (really – it’s tasty!), sunless tanner has come leaps and bounds since it was first invented. Although it’s not the same as the real thing, it’s pretty damn close and you won’t have to live with any negative consequences afterwards.

    Feel free to leave your own recommendations for sunless tanners in a comment on this post so that my readers will know where to start when picking out a sunless tanner! And what do you know, I even have some of my own recommendations that I wrote about last summer in this post!

    GUEST POST: How to wear stripes

    1 comment

    Today’s guest poster, freelance blogger Julia, shares some of her tips for how every fashionista can wear one of this season’s hottest trends… Stripes!

    —————–

    Big or small, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, stripes are totally in this season! Curious to see what the trend looks like on you but don’t know how to wear them? If you don’t know where to start, take a look at these tips for ideas to get you started.

    For every fashionista:

    Don’t be scared of horizontal stripes
    It’s a big fat myth that horizontal stripes make you look wider. We’ve always been told to shy away from this kind of stripe for this reason. If this is the only reason you’re not pulling on horizontally-striped apparel, it’s completely unfounded and shouldn’t keep you away any longer.

    For the timid fashionista:

    Pair stripes with a neutral color
    If you want to play around with stripes but feel the need to play it safe, take your striped piece and wear it with a neutral. Wear a block-striped top with a tan or black skirt. Pair your striped dress with a solid, neutral-colored bag and shoes. You don’t have to go over the top in order to work this great trend.

    Wear smaller stripes
    Try out a smaller stripe, or even a pinstripe, if you are anxious to get into stripes this summer but aren’t ready to fully commit to large block stripes. A general rule to remember is that the smaller the stripe pattern is, the less flashy and bold it looks. Throw on a pinstriped scarf with your solid color outfit, or a pair of pinstriped shorts. Once you get your toes wet, you may be more inclined to step it up to larger stripes!

    For the bold fashionista:

    Mix stripes with patterns
    For the daring fashionista, take your striped top and wear it with a floral or animal print skirt or visa versa. It’s a great look that’s sure to get attention and make you the trendiest girl in your group. Don’t be afraid to mismatch colors either. Wear your black and white striped top with a blue and purple floral skirt.

    Learn from 70s style
    If you’re feeling extra outrageous and want to go stripe-crazy, take a look at styles from the 70s to get ideas. From dresses with blocks of striped going both vertically and horizontally, to retrograde stripes (both thin and thick stripes), these ladies had it going on! Transport yourself back in time and be part of the fashion movement to bring the stripe-craze back.

    For every fashionista:

    Experiment with striped accessories
    Whether your style is safe or daring, play around with striped accessories. Pair striped accessories with other striped fashions, or wear them with solid color clothing for a small, yet noticeable accent. There really isn’t a wrong way to wear striped shoes, bags, belts, and jewelry!

    Now that you have some guidelines for how you can incorporate this summer’s trend into your wardrobe, it’s time to do what we do best: shop! There really isn’t a wrong way to wear stripes. Wear stripes in whatever way you feel comfortable – whether it’s a “glammed out” 70s maxi dress or a subtly pinstriped espadrille. Above all, be confident. Wear the stripes proudly, don’t let them wear you!

    5 easy hairstyles for medium, long, wavy, curly or straight hair

    10 comments

    Hair Stylist Caitlyn Miller made a point that really hit home in her guest post the other day – it’s way too easy to get in the routine of doing your hair the same way every day. This pretty much sums up my own look – same old, same old. And boring!

    Inspired by Caitlyn’s post, I took it upon myself to find some new styles that were simple enough that even someone like me could recreate them (I’m really, really bad at styling my own hair). I tried out a bunch of styles but in the end I found five that I’m really excited to wear.

    These hairstyles are not only super easy, they’re also super quick! Every single one of them can be done in less than ten minutes (most of them in two minutes or less). I’m guessing that’s less time than you spend on your hair right now, which really gives you no excuse not to experiment with something new!

    1) Barely-There Waves:

    First, mist your dry hair with water. Then pull your hair up into a loose bun centered on the crown of your head (it doesn’t have to look nice). Next, blow-dry your bun in place for a few minutes to set the waves.

    When you unravel your hair, it will have a soft wave to it. Follow with a defrizz cream and texture cream to smooth out your tresses. This hairstyle is actually a good base for all the other hairstyles I talk about in this post.

    Inspiration for the look above came from Ashley Green’s flawless waves

    2) Perfect Messy Bun:

    In college, a messy bun was the go-to hair style for most girls going to class because it took a mere five seconds. This is a take on the classic messy bun, but it ensures that all parts of the bun look the way you want them to – so that it can be worn out in public and not just with your sweat pants to the lecture hall.

    Take your dry hair and brush it with your fingers. Pull it up into a pony tail on the crown of your head (mine is a little lower in this picture – but the putting it on your crown will make it look more elegant and purposeful). Then, mess the pony tail up a bit. Take individual pieces of hair from the tail and twist them, pinning them around the base of the pony tail in an uneven manner. Don’t be afraid to let pieces of hair stick out from the bun – that’s part of what makes it “messy.” Top it off with a little hairspray.

    3) Triple Knots:

    This is such an easy, but elegant updo! Brush your hair back and pull it into three pony tails in the back of your head, at the base of your neck. Secure with pony tail holders. Spray your hair with hairspray. Let it dry and then mess the pony tails up so they look a little undone. Twist the pony tails into three messy ballerina buns. Pin the buns to keep them in place. If the buns are awkwardly far apart (mine were at first), use bobby pins to pin them closer together.

    Inspiration for the look above came from Real Simple magazine

    4) Super Messy Side Braid:

    We all know how to braid, right? I’m going to assume that’s a yes.

    This style actually looks best on hair longer than mine, but it still works here. After your hair is wavy and textured (see hairstyle number one), comb through it with your fingers and gather it on one side of your head. Braid it to the side and ignore the fact that some of your hair is falling out of the braid on both sides (if it’s not falling out, pull it out – that’s part of the look). Secure the braid with a hair tie (preferably a small one – smaller than the one I used here). Use a curling iron or curling flat iron to make the pieces that fell out of the braid a little more wavy. Top it off with a little hairspray and you’re good to go.

    Inspiration for the above look came from Alexander Wang’s fashion models

    5) Banded Updo:

    After your hair is wavy and textured (see hair style number 1), wrap a headband with an elastic band around your head like a crown so that the pretty part of the headband is across your forehead. Make sure to also leave two inch-thick pieces hanging out in the front so that the style looks “undone.”

    Gather your hair back in a very loose, low pony tail. Secure a pony tail holder down at the bottom of your tail. Only an inch or two of your hair should be hanging at the bottom of of the pony tail holder.

    Carefully roll your pony tail up the back of your neck and hook it into the back of your headband. Then top if off with a little hairspray and you’re done!

    Inspiration for the look above came from Bumble and Bumble’s YouTube channel.

    Do you have any hairstyling tips for me and my readers? Is there an easy hairstyle that you want to tell us about? Leave a comment to let us know!

    How to: 1960s Pin-Up Girl Eyes

    4 comments

    I was watching the 1960s version of Batman the other night and as much fun as it was to laugh at the cheesy renditions of the Joker and the Riddler, it was the Cat Woman who really caught my eye.

    Lee Meriwether was strikingly beautiful in the movie, and some of her allure can be attributed to her 1960s pin-up girl eye makeup: Big, long (fake) eyelashes; thick, black (liquid) eyeliner on her upper lids; and a touch of eye shadow to top it all off.

    Makeup in the 1960s really was at its prime. The look had finally shifted from the “siren pout” (in the 1950s) to be all about the eyes. In my opinion, a welcome change.

    As I was silently admiring Cat Woman’s beauty, one of my guy friends piped up with a comment that affirmed my though process. “I wish women still wore eye makeup like that,” he said.

    Lucky for the modern woman (and my guy friends), 1960s eyes are making a comeback! I swear, I didn’t make this up. Check out Katy Perry, Alicia Keys and Lauren Conrad channeling their inner Marlyin Monroes.

    And this retro-glam look is actually very easy to create. Hub Pages has some great advice on how to do it. All you’ll need is:

    +Liquid eyeliner
    +Foundation
    +Fake lashes or a really excellent lengthening AND thickening mascara
    +White eye shadow
    +White eyeliner
    +Another eye shadow color (blues and greens were very popular in the 60s)

    1. Apply foundation all over your eyelids.

    2. Apply white eyeshadow all over your eyelids and blend it.

    3. Use your liquid eyeliner to line your eyelids close to your lash line from the inner corner of our eye all the way along the outer corner. Then, go over the line again, making it thicker at the outer half of the eye.

    4. Apply medium color all over your eyelids and blend it up into the crease and up on the brown bone, but not up to the brow. The white shadow should still be visible.

    5. Apply false lashes, if you have them.

    6. Then apply mascara. Start the wand at the base of your lashes then gantly zig zag it from side to side while combing through the lashes. Make sure that every lash is coated. Apply a heavy coat to bottom lashes as well.

    7. After the first coat of mascara is dry, apply a second. Allow you lashes to stick together (this was actually a sought-after look in the 1960s).

    8. Top off your look with a generous coat of white eyeliner on the inside of your eyes along the top and bottom lash line. This helps open up your eyes and make them look bigger.

    I really like to pair this eye with red lipstick, or a pink lip gloss, (such as Nivia Pink Glossy Lip Care).

    Okay ladies, lets give Cat Woman a run for her money!

    How To APPLY Red Lipstick

    5 comments

    I neglected to mention in my last post about choosing the perfect shade of red lipstick that proper application is essential so that it doesn’t smear or run.

    Here is a video by Self Magazine, explaining in one minute and 20 seconds how to apply red lipstick the right way.

    If you’re looking for a lip liner that matches the lipstick you picked out, bring your lipstick to your local Sephora store or makeup counter and ask a salesperson to help you find a matching shade. Lip brushes are also available at these stores, and online, ranging from the price of $2.99 to $30.

    If you’re still searching for the perfect shade of red lipstick, check out my previous blog entry “How to Wear Red Lipstick” for suggestions based on your skin tone and lip shape.

    How to WEAR Red Lipstick

    11 comments

    If you have been following my blog for long, you already know that I’m a big fan of red lipstick because I’ve worn it in numerous outfit posts (like this one), and talked about it repeatedly. What you may not know, however, is how to pick out a the best red lipstick for yourself.

    In this post you’ll find information about how to choose a red lipstick based on your skin tone and lip shape. I’ll also provide recommendations for the best red lipsticks, based on this criteria.

    Depending on your SKIN TONE

    There are shades of red lipstick out there that are specifically designed to compliment every skin tone. It’s simply a matter of finding ones that are right for you. That’s the tricky part.

    Pale-skinned women…

    Pale skinned women should gravitate toward reds with cool, blue undertones.

    Red lipstick recommendations for women with pale skin:
    Clinique Angel Red
    Make Up Forever Rouge Artist Intense #42
    Urban Decay Revolution (I own this one – Not only does it come is a fabulously sexy tube, but it’s a fantastic red that looks great on light and olive skin tones as well.)

    Nicole Kidman is wearing a similar lipsticks to the ones mentioned above, here.

    I’m wearing a coral-red here.

    Medium-to-dark skinned women…

    Medium to dark skinned women can get away with deeper reds that have brown or tawny bases. In other words, warmer reds.

    Best red lipsticks for medium-to-dark skinned women:
    Kat Von D Painted Love in ‘Underage Red’
    Vincent Longo Lipstain Lipstick in ‘Belle Etoile’

    Jessica Alba’s medium skin looks beautiful with warm, red lips.

    Darker skinned women…

    Darker skinned women can pull off pinkish reds, fuchsias and orange-based poppy reds. For example,

    The best red lipsticks for dark-skinned women:
    Benefit Ruby Vibes
    Benefit ‘Ms. Behavin’

    Rihanna and Beyonce’ effortlessly master the look by wearing fuchsia reds that look beautiful next to their dark skin tones.

    Depending on your LIP SHAPE

    When choosing the perfect red lipstick, you should also take the size and shape of your lips into account.

    Fuller-lipped ladies…

    Fuller-lipped ladies can get away with darker, deeper reds. (Just as a dark outfit is slimming, dark lipstick makes your lips appear thinner.)

    Angelina Jolie looks striking with her blood red lips. Because her lips are so full, she pulls off this dark color nicely.

    Thinner-lipped ladies…

    Thinner-lipped ladies (like myself) can still rock the trend if we lean toward brighter, more neutral tones.

    See Blake Lively, above.

    Once you’ve found the perfect red lipstick…

    Pair it with subtle face makeup. Go light on your blush and bronzer, to avoid looking like a clown. Also, avoid heavy eye shadows. When I wear red lipstick, I like to wear simple black liner and mascara. Allow your lips to be the part of your face that is making the biggest statement.

    Another great way to find the shade for you is to go to your local makeup counter (or Sephora store) and test a bunch of different shades. I found mine by asking a Sephora sales person for assistance and help.

    How to make your hair grow faster

    4 comments

    Trying to grow out your hair (like Blake Lively) or simply keep it healthy?

    Unfortunately, there’s no INSTANT hair growth technique. (Except extensions!) But there are things you can do to maintain the health of the hair you already have so that length happens a lot quicker.

    Here are some tips:

    1) Switch to sulfate-free shampoo.

    2) Shampoo your hair every other day, at the most.
    This is important for maintaining the natural oils in your hair and keeping it from breaking. I know it might seem like your hair needs to be shampooed every day to keep it from getting oily, but this is a myth. Your hair plays a sort of trick on you when it’s used to being shampooed every day. Your scalp actually produces more oil than is necessary, in order to make up for the oil that is being removed with daily shampoos. It might take a week but your oil production will slow down once you stop shampooing your hair every day. So, give your hair a rest every other day.

    3) Massage your scalp for five minutes every other day.
    This one sounds pretty weird, but apparently getting the blood flow going helps your hair grow!

    4) Give your hair a break from heat every few days.
    This one is pretty obvious. Blow drying and straightening your hair causes breakage. The less you attack your hair with heat, the healthier your hair will feel.

    5) Use a heat protector.

    6) Comb your hair in the shower while you still have conditioner in.
    This helps to prevents breakage. It is way easier to work a comb through your hair while it has conditioner in it, making combing your hair way less of a stressor for your hair. I actually keep a comb in my shower for this exact reason. It’s amazing how much better my hair feels when I get out of the shower, if I’ve already combed it while I was in there.

    7) Rinse the conditioner out of your hair with cold water, instead of warm.
    The cold seals the cuticle of the hair, helping to prevent split ends. You don’t have to freeze your butt off but you should turn the temperature down for a few seconds while you’re rinsing your hair.

    8 ) Use a mayo treatment.

    9) Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.
    Cotton can be rough on your hair because of the way it’s woven. Strands of hair can get caught in the weave and this causes tangles and breakage. Using a silk or satin pillowcase is great for ALL hair types, but it’s epically beneficial to curly hair, which is more prone to tangles, frizz and breakage.

    10) Get your ends trimmed every two months.
    This gets rid of split ends. If you don’t cut off split ends, they will continue to split up your strands of hair causing them to become weak, tangled and eventually break off.

    11) Take hair growth vitamins like Phyto Phytophanere Dietary Supplement- Hair & Nails or Hairtopia vitamins.
    Eventually, I’m planning on blogging about these, so I’ll talk more about how they work then.

    These are the tips and tricks I’ve picked up through research and my own experiences. I’ve tried most of these tips and have been pleased with the results.
