Today is my 29th birthday and I’m spending it at a dear friend’s wedding celebrating her love (and also just happen to be surrounded by some of my closest friends and favorite people). In other words, it’s a great way to spend the day.
My 20s have been awesome – lots of life milestones and countless incredible memories – but the closer I get to 30 the more I appreciate how my perspective has evolved over the past nine years. There’s a certain confidence and security that comes with getting older and I’m looking forward to the last year of my 20s and what the next decade has in store.
The silk button up gets a bad rap for being a boring ingredient in your nine-to-five uniform. When in actuality, a fabulous piece like the Equipment ‘Bret’ blouse I introduced you to last week is so much more than just a boring staple! It can actually be the key component of an awesome weekend outfit when you pair it with something a little less polished, such as distressed denim. Whether you’re meeting girlfriends for brunch, running errands, or headed out on the town – here are two ideas for how to remix your silk button up (no trousers or pencil skirts here!) this weekend…
I’ve always wanted a pair of sleek, skinny, leather pants. But the thing is – I’m super picky about fit. And I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m not going to find a pair where I love both the fit AND it’s in my price range. Oh well.
So that brings me to fake leather (pleather, if you will). Nothing wrong with that. But with pleather too, I run into issues with fit (mostly because pleather stretches). Not to mention the fact that every pair I’ve tried on just happend to make a squeaky sound when I walked. Don’t get me wrong, I like to stand out as much as the next person… But I’d rather people not hear me coming from a mile away.
Denim, on the other hand, I feel good about. Everyone looks great in jeans! And what’s more, coated jeans look a lot like leather and are about a zillionth of the price. So lets do the math here…
You’ve got the fit of jeans + the price of denim + the look of leather = the perfect pair of pants. So why did it take me so long to get a pair of coated jeans? I have no idea. But when I finally did, this outfit was the result!
What I’m wearing here is pretty much my ideal “going out” outfit. It’s dressy enough for a swanky bar (especially by Portland’s standards). But at the same time it’s low key, comfortable, and flattering. Black on black is always a great combo and with the pop of red in my bag… Well let’s just say I was feeling pretty good in this.
Pulling together cute outfits for an evening out on the town is tricky enough when there isn’t the threat of snow on the horizon. But when it’s snowing and raining off and on all day – all I can think about is curling up on the couch with Boyfriend and Puppy and enjoying some tea and a good TV show (The Big Bang Theory is our new favorite!) It’s times like these when it’s the hardest to pull myself together.
But… I managed. Boyfriend and I had a double date last weekend with another couple friend of ours and after piling on layer after layer of cozy essentials, I felt much better and ready to face the evening. All I can say is thank gosh for black tights. Believe me, women everywhere, young and old, are grateful to whoever invented them. I’m wearing my favorite pair in this outfit.
As the sun was setting, Boyfriend and I walked hand-in-hand in the freezing cold toward the Street Car that took us through Downtown Portland into the Pearl District for dinner and drinks with our friends.
Also, Roman Sunstone was kind enough to send a bunch of jewlery my way! I’m wearing two of the pieces I received from them in these photos, specifically this necklace & these earrings. See more of their fashionable (and extremely affordable) collections at Romansunstone.com.
